Best Time to Visit Oman: A Complete Seasonal Travel Guide

Oman is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and experience — beaches, mountains, deserts, or Salalah’s famous green season. This guide makes it easy to choose the right travel season and plan your Oman trip with confidence.

October to April: The Best Season for Most Tourists

For most visitors, the best time to visit Oman is from October to April. The weather is pleasant, outdoor activities are comfortable, and it’s perfect for sightseeing across the country.

Best for:

- Muscat city tours and public beaches

- Cultural trips to Nizwa, forts, and traditional villages

- Wadis such as Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole

- Desert trips, camping, and stargazing

Travel tip:

This is the peak tourist season in Oman. Hotels and tours can be busier, so booking accommodations and transport in advance is recommended.

May to September: Hot Season (Still Good for the Right Plans)

Summer in Oman can be very hot, especially in Muscat and inland areas. However, it can still be a good time to visit if you plan your activities carefully.

Best for:

- Early morning or evening city activities

- Coastal areas with sea breeze

- Short trips with air-conditioned transport

Travel tip:

If you visit during summer, choose a comfortable vehicle with strong air conditioning and plan your driving around cooler hours of the day.

Salalah’s Khareef Season (June to September): A Unique Experience

Khareef is Salalah’s famous season when the region turns green with mist, light rain, and cooler temperatures compared to the rest of Oman. It is one of the most unique travel experiences in the country.

Best for:

- Green landscapes and waterfalls

- Scenic drives and mountain viewpoints

- Local festivals and family tourism

Travel tip:

Khareef season is very popular. Plan early, especially for accommodation and transportation.

Mountain Trips: Jebel Akhdar & Jebel Shams

Oman’s mountain regions are best visited during the cooler months from October to April. Temperatures are lower, and hiking and sightseeing are much more enjoyable.

Important note:

Some mountain roads, especially Jebel Akhdar, require a 4x4 vehicle.

Desert Adventures: Wahiba Sands / Sharqiya Sands

Desert trips are best planned between October and April. Cooler temperatures make dune driving, camping, and sunset views more enjoyable and safe.

Quick Summary: When Should You Visit Oman?

- Best overall season: October to April

- Salalah green season (Khareef): June to September

- Mountains: October to April (4x4 often required)

- Desert trips: October to April
